Registered dietitian for weight gain in Barcelona and online

A nutrition strategy to gain weight in a healthy way

Not everyone wants to lose weight. Some people need to gain it for their health or sporting performance, or simply because they feel better carrying more weight and body mass. Many have spent years trying on their own without success. At Alimmenta we have spent more than 17 years helping underweight patients get there with personalised, realistic and sustainable guidance, adapted to their body, their appetite and their lifestyle.

Start with these guides

The most common questions, explained by our dietitians. In the consultation we apply them to your case.

Gaining weight is harder than people think, and “eat more” is not a plan. First, we look at why it is difficult for you —lifelong thinness, weight loss after an illness or treatment, gaining muscle mass— and from there build a way of eating that increases density and frequency without leaving you feeling full all day. The goal is not a number on the scales: it is to gain muscle mass and strength, not just fat. And if you are losing weight without trying to, your doctor comes first, not us.

What we do

We look at why it is difficult for you to gain weight: how much you really eat, how much you move, how you sleep and what makes you feel full too soon.
We increase the density and frequency of meals without leaving you bloated or without an appetite for the next one.
We support weight recovery after an illness, surgery or treatment, in line with what your doctor has advised.
We work on gaining muscle mass alongside strength training, not separately from it.
We review whether there is a digestive issue behind it —early fullness, bloating, malabsorption— and tell you when that needs to go to your doctor.
We identify when what lies behind it is not “I cannot put on weight” but a difficult relationship with food, and guide you.

What we don't do

We do not aim for you to put on weight in any way at all: the goal is muscle mass and strength, not a number.
We do not diagnose. If you are losing weight without intending to, your doctor needs to look into that before anyone else.
We do not sell or recommend “weight gainers”, high-calorie shakes or supplements as the mainstay of the plan.
We do not treat an eating disorder from here. If that is the case, we will tell you and guide you on where to go.
We do not put calorie or weekly weight-gain figures on this page: that belongs to your individual situation and appointment.
We do not turn food into an obligation that creates more anxiety than appetite.

Who this consultation is for

  • You have always been thin, and eating more does not make you gain weight.

  • You have lost weight after an illness, surgery or treatment and want to regain it.

  • You do strength training and want to gain muscle mass, not just fat.

  • You feel full very quickly or almost everything makes you feel unwell, so you eat little.

  • You are losing weight without trying: we will tell you where to start, and it is not here.

  • You want to gain weight, but the idea of putting on weight makes you anxious.

How we work

  • Tell us why you want to gain weight

Our reception team gathers how long this has been happening, whether you have lost weight unintentionally, whether you are receiving treatment for anything and whether you train, then assigns you to a registered dietitian from the team. If what you tell us suggests that a medical appointment needs to come first, we will tell you before you come.

  • First appointment

We review your history, your blood tests if you bring them, what you eat in a real week —almost always less than it seems—, your schedules and what makes you feel full too soon. We assess body composition, because weight alone does not say what you are gaining.

  • A plan you can actually eat

We increase intake without increasing volume: more density, more eating occasions, recipes that are genuinely practical and options for days when you cannot manage anything. If you train, we organise it around your sessions. If the issue is digestive, we adapt textures and distribution.

  • Follow-up

We keep adjusting according to what we see in body composition and how you feel, not just according to the scales. If your weight does not change or a sign appears that belongs with your doctor, we will tell you and help you arrange that appointment.

Frequently asked questions

I have tried eating more and still do not gain weight. What will you do differently?

We will start by measuring rather than assuming. Almost always, one of three things is happening: you eat less than you think, you eat a lot at once and little for the rest of the day, or you fill your stomach with things that provide little. From there, the plan increases density and frequency, and in the first weeks it is often more noticeable in strength than on the scales.

I am losing weight without meaning to. Should I see a dietitian?

Your doctor first. Losing weight without intending to, with loose-fitting clothes and without changing what you eat, is a sign that needs investigating, not a matter of diet. Once your doctor has looked into what is behind it, a nutrition appointment can contribute a great deal to recovery. In that order.

Will I gain only fat?

It depends on how it is done, and that is exactly the work. Without strength training and with protein poorly distributed, much of what you gain is fat. With enough intake and strength work, the proportion changes. That is why we measure body composition.

Will you recommend shakes or weight gainers?

Not as a mainstay. Food is the foundation, because it is what can be sustained and what also nourishes you. There are cases —poor appetite, recovery after illness, some medical plans— where a nutritional supplement helps you get there: it is used thoughtfully and for a time, not instead of learning how to eat.

I want to gain weight, but the idea of putting on weight overwhelms me. Is that normal?

It is more common than it seems, and it is worth saying so at the first appointment. If the idea of gaining weight creates a lot of anxiety, or if you have been tightly controlling what you eat for some time, that changes the consultation: nutrition psychology, or an assessment with the psychology team, may be what is needed. We discuss it without judgement and tell you which door is yours.

Can it be done online?

Yes. The same team, the same follow-up and the same price in clinic and by video call. In-person appointments add something when we want to assess body composition with the bioimpedance scales; if that matters in your case, we combine both.

Nutrition visits do not replace your doctor’s care. If you are under treatment, we work alongside them.
