SIBO dietitian in Barcelona and online

Your gastroenterologist diagnoses SIBO with a breath test. From there, we take care of helping you with food.

Start with these guides

The most common questions, explained by our dietitians. In the consultation we apply them to your case.

As SIBO dietitians, we support the treatment your gastroenterologist prescribes. We help you eat enough and regain variety. If you also have irritable bowel syndrome, we can guide a temporary low-FODMAP diet and its reintroduction. If you have symptoms and no test, we direct you to a doctor before starting. In Barcelona and online.

What we do

We start with your breath test, your diagnosis and the plan your gastroenterologist has given you.
We adjust what you eat during treatment so that it is easier to manage and you eat enough.
If you also have irritable bowel syndrome and a low-FODMAP diet is appropriate, we agree from day one when the exclusion phase ends. It lasts 2 to 6 weeks and is followed by guided reintroduction.
We help you come out of restriction if you have spent months cutting out foods without anyone guiding you.
We help you return to a varied diet after antibiotic treatment.
If a symptom does not fit with SIBO, we tell you when to return to your doctor.

What we don't do

We do not diagnose SIBO. Your gastroenterologist diagnoses it with a breath test.
We do not request tests or recommend intolerance or microbiota tests sold online.
We neither prescribe nor suggest antibiotics or ‘natural antimicrobials’. We do not present diet as the treatment for SIBO. It supports the treatment your doctor prescribes.
We do not leave you in the elimination phase of a low-FODMAP diet for months. We do not recommend probiotics for SIBO: there is not enough evidence. They would only be considered for a specific medical indication; your doctor or dietitian-nutritionist determines their use.

Who this consultation is for

  • You have a SIBO diagnosis with a breath test and do not know what to eat.

  • You are having antibiotic treatment and want to manage it better.

  • You have spent months on a low-FODMAP diet and nobody has guided your reintroduction.

  • You have had a relapse after improving.

  • You have irritable bowel syndrome and have been told about SIBO.

  • You have symptoms, nobody has tested you and you do not know which doctor to see.

How we work

  • First appointment

We review your breath test, reports and treatment, what you have been cutting out and what you tolerate today. You finish the appointment with your first recommendations and a sheet to record your symptoms that week.

  • Eating plan at the second appointment

Seven days later, you have your written eating plan, compatible with your treatment. If you also have irritable bowel syndrome and a low-FODMAP diet is appropriate, the exclusion phase lasts 2 to 6 weeks. We set its end date and plan guided reintroduction from day one.

  • Follow-up, every two weeks

If you have followed that plan for irritable bowel syndrome, we reintroduce one food group at each follow-up and see how it agrees with you. This allows you to eat more foods again in an organised way, while monitoring your symptoms.

  • Eating a varied diet again

We work on the fibre you tolerate and on variety. If symptoms return, we review your food with you and recommend returning to your gastroenterologist to assess what is happening. Afterwards, appointments become less frequent, until you have a review every three months.

Frequently asked questions

Can you diagnose SIBO?

No, and you should know this before booking. SIBO is diagnosed with a breath test, using lactulose or glucose, requested and interpreted by your gastroenterologist. Our work is nutrition, starting from that diagnosis. If you want to know how to prepare for the test and how it is done, see the guide to SIBO symptoms and diagnosis.

Does diet eliminate SIBO?

No. Treatment for bacterial overgrowth is medical. Food supports it, makes symptoms more manageable and stops treatment from leaving you eating just four things. Be wary of any diet that promises to get rid of SIBO on its own.

What about probiotics or herbal products?

We do not recommend herbal products as a treatment for SIBO: if treatment is needed, your doctor decides. The 2020 ACG guideline does not find consistent data to recommend specific probiotics for SIBO. They would only be considered for a specific medical indication; your doctor or dietitian-nutritionist determines their use.

I have irritable bowel syndrome. Is it the same thing?

They are not the same, although they share some symptoms and are often confused. Irritable bowel syndrome is a clinical diagnosis, while SIBO needs a breath test. The nutritional approach partly overlaps, but the starting point and expectations differ. That is why we first ask what you have been diagnosed with.

How much does the first appointment cost?

The first appointment costs €75 and lasts 45 minutes, in person or by video consultation. If you decide to continue, the 5-appointment package, which we recommend, costs €350 (the 10-appointment package costs €650). Some insurers have an agreement with us that reduces the cost of the consultation; check yours in the insurance section.

Can it be done online?

Yes. Guided reintroduction is mostly follow-up and adjustments, and by video consultation it works just as well as in person, at the same price. You send us your breath test and reports before the first appointment.

Nutrition visits do not replace your doctor’s care. If you are under treatment, we work alongside them.
