Start with these guides

The most common questions, explained by our dietitians. In the consultation we apply them to your case.

An oncology dietitian helps you maintain your nutritional status during cancer treatment and regain it afterwards: what to eat when you have nausea, loss of appetite, changes in taste or difficulty swallowing, how to avoid losing weight and muscle mass, and how to return to a normal diet when treatment ends. At Alimmenta, we always work in coordination with your oncologist and medical team: food supports treatment; it does not replace or cure it.

What we do

The oncology nutrition consultation supports the treatment prescribed by your medical team. It does not replace it. If you have questions about your treatment, speak to your oncologist.

What we don't do

We do not treat the tumour. No diet, fasting or supplement does that, and some can interfere with treatment. We do not diagnose or change your treatment or medication. Your medical team monitors how the disease progresses.
We do not give timeframes or weight figures. We adapt to your treatment and how you are feeling.
We do not sell supplements or “anti-cancer” products.
We do not handle emergencies. If you have a fever during chemotherapy, go to the emergency department today without taking paracetamol or any other fever-reducing medicine first.

Who this consultation is for

  • You are having treatment —chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy or surgery— and are finding it hard to eat: nausea, loss of appetite, strange tastes, mouth sores, diarrhoea or constipation.

  • You have lost weight or strength unintentionally since diagnosis, or your medical team has advised you to look after your diet.

  • You have digestive or head and neck cancer, or surgery that changes how you eat, and need to adapt textures and amounts.

  • You have finished treatment and want to regain weight, muscle mass and habits, or manage the weight gain that sometimes appears.

  • You care for someone with cancer and do not know what to cook or how to help without pushing.

  • You have heard about ‘anti-cancer’ diets, fasting or supplements and want to know what has a sound basis and what does not.

How we work

  • Tell us about your situation

Our reception team gathers which treatment you are having, where you are in it and what concerns you, then assigns you a dietitian with experience in oncology. If your medical team has given you nutritional guidance or reports, bring them: that is where we start.

  • First appointment

We review your clinical history and reports, the side effects you have, your weight and how it has changed, what you are managing to eat today and what appeals to you. You can bring someone with you. You leave with clear priorities for the next few days, not an impossible list.

  • A realistic plan for the stage you are in

We adapt your plan to how you are: textures, timings, small and frequent portions if needed, foods you tolerate better and ways to enrich meals so that you do not lose weight. If your doctor has prescribed nutritional supplements, we help you fit them into everyday life.

  • Coordinated follow-up

We adjust the plan as your treatment and symptoms change and, if you authorise us, share the information with your medical team. When treatment ends, we work on recovery: weight, strength and a way of eating that helps you feel well.

Frequently asked questions

Can food cure cancer or stop treatment?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not helping you. No diet —alkaline, ketogenic, sugar-free or ‘anti-cancer’— cures cancer or replaces chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. What good nutrition can do is help you tolerate treatment better, avoid losing weight and strength, and recover afterwards. That is our job.

Can I start before treatment begins?

Yes, and it is often a good idea. Reaching treatment or surgery in good nutritional condition helps you cope with it better. At the first appointment, we look at how you are, what you can prepare and which changes to anticipate according to the treatment ahead, always in line with what your medical team has advised.

What if I have no appetite or everything tastes bad?

It is very common during treatment, and there are practical solutions: changing temperatures and textures, splitting food into small meals, choosing foods that are better tolerated and enriching what you do eat. It is not about forcing you to eat; it is about finding what goes down well for you now and making sure it nourishes you.

How much does the first appointment cost?

The price depends on the format and you will know it before booking: our reception team confirms it or you can see it on the fees page. The first appointment is longer than follow-up appointments because we review your reports, symptoms and situation. There is no commitment to follow-up: you decide afterwards.

Can it be done online?

Yes. During treatment, getting around can be difficult, and video consultations make follow-up possible from home, with the person who cares for you beside you if you wish. You can start online and move to in-person appointments, or the other way around. If at any point your situation calls for an in-person assessment or referral to hospital, we will tell you.

Do I need a referral from my oncologist?

It is not essential: you can book an appointment directly. But we do need to know which treatment you are having and work in coordination with your medical team, because decisions about supplements, restrictions and food safety during immunosuppression depend on them. Bring your reports to the first appointment.

Nutrition visits do not replace your doctor’s care. If you are under treatment, we work alongside them.
