Nutrition as part of your treatment

Arthritis, psoriasis, autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, COPD, anaemia or kidney disease call for an adapted diet. A personalised diet can help you improve your parameters, reduce risks and support your medical treatment. Because what you eat is also part of how you look after yourself.

Dietary advice needs to fit each disease and support medical care. Arthritis, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, COPD, anaemia, kidney disease and migraine call for different approaches. An anti-inflammatory diet is a Mediterranean-based eating pattern that supports your treatment and does not replace it. Start with the guide for your disease.

What we can work on with you

Situations we can help with

For each one we explain what we do in clinic, what is not a matter of diet and which guide you can read.

Arthritis, psoriasis and autoimmune conditions

You want to know what role nutrition plays alongside your treatment.

What we do

  • We review what you eat, which foods you have already cut out and why, and what stage your condition is at.
  • We prepare a shorter plan for days when symptoms flare up.

What we don’t do

  • Replace your medication. Food may help you feel better alongside your treatment and not instead of it.

Anaemia or kidney disease

Your blood test results are abnormal and you have questions about what to eat.

What we do

  • We go through your blood test results with you and explain what diet can influence.
  • We work with your primary care doctor or kidney specialist when needed.

What we don’t do

  • Prescribe a renal diet if you are not under the care of a kidney specialist.
  • Stop or reduce your medication.

How we work

What the appointment is like

These are the steps of working with your team, from the first appointment to follow-up.

  1. First appointment

You bring your reports and medication. We review how you eat, what you have already removed and why, how your weight and strength are doing, and what stage of the disease you are at. You leave with your first recommendations.

  2. Your eating pattern, one week later

At the second appointment you receive your eating pattern in writing, with your meals, budget and schedule. It includes a short version for flare-up days, when cooking is difficult and eating is harder.

  3. Adjustments every fortnight

We review how you feel, reintroduce foods that were excluded without reason and look at what does seem to affect you. We try the changes for three months and assess with you what they contribute. If something is a matter for your doctor, we tell you and coordinate with them.

  4. Maintaining the eating pattern

When eating this way has become your way of eating, we space out appointments and review every three months. And if a flare-up changes everything, we adapt the plan to that moment.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us most

Is there one eating plan for all these conditions?

No. Start with the guide for your condition. In a consultation, we review what you eat alongside your diagnosis and the advice your medical team has already given you.

Can an anti-inflammatory diet replace my treatment?

No. Our guide to anti-inflammatory eating explains what you can expect from it. Continue to follow medical advice and ask before making changes that might affect your treatment.

Why are there separate guides for arthritis, psoriasis and fibromyalgia?

Each condition raises different questions. Read the relevant guide to see what role food may play in your case, without applying advice intended for another condition.

Can I follow a general guide if I have kidney disease or anaemia?

Use it to prepare your questions. If you have kidney disease, your eating plan depends on your situation and test results; review it with your kidney specialist. If you have anaemia, your doctor needs to assess the cause and treatment.

Where should I start if I have migraine?

Start with the guide to food and migraine. If you are also interested in DAO deficiency, another guide looks at what the evidence says. Tell your doctor about any symptom that is new or different from your usual symptoms.

Nutrition visits do not replace your doctor’s care. If you are under treatment, we work alongside them.
