In Spain, Ozempic (semaglutide) is funded only for type 2 diabetes, subject to prior authorisation and specific conditions [1][2]. Wegovy and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are not funded for any indication [1][2]. Without funding, you pay the full price of the pack, which varies by presentation. Before starting, work out with your doctor how many months you can afford to continue.

What does the Spanish National Health System fund?

Funding depends on the medicine and its indication. Ozempic and Rybelsus (semaglutide) and Trulicity (dulaglutide) are listed as funded for type 2 diabetes subject to prior authorisation [1]. This authorisation is approval from the medicines inspectorate confirming that you meet the conditions. Having a prescription alone does not guarantee that the SNS will pay part of the cost of the pack.

For Ozempic, the conditions are a body mass index of 30 or above and use in combination with other antidiabetic medicines, including insulin [2]. The 2 mg weekly dose is not funded [2]. Liraglutide for diabetes has its own conditions depending on the presentation, so check the one for your prescription [1].

Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide), authorised for weight management, are not funded [1]. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not funded either, for weight management or type 2 diabetes [1][2]. To understand the indications and limitations of each, start with the guide to GLP-1 medicines.

How much do you pay with an SNS prescription?

With a prescription from Spain’s National Health System (SNS) and, where required, prior authorisation, a funded medicine has a reduced patient contribution. The rules set different percentages, exemptions and caps depending on your income and whether you are working or a pensioner [3]; some people are exempt. What you pay depends on your circumstances, not on a single fixed amount, and you will see it when the prescription is dispensed.

The final amount is shown when the official prescription is dispensed. If the medicine or its indication is not funded, an SNS prescription does not turn the retail price into a co-payment: you pay the full price of the pack. To estimate the cost over several months, ask your doctor which presentation is planned and check the table before each purchase.

Why is Mounjaro not funded?

In December 2025, the Interministerial Commission on Medicine Prices rejected the manufacturer’s representations and proposed excluding Mounjaro from publicly funded pharmaceutical provision [2]. The reason given was public expenditure and its impact on the SNS budget [2]. The official funding search tool lists it as unfunded [1]. This status may change, which is why we review the table every three months.

The decision covers all six tirzepatide strengths, from 2.5 to 15 mg, but does not set a retail price for each one [2]. Until we confirm that breakdown in the Nomenclátor, the table shows the price range for Mounjaro rather than the price of each strength.

Private prescriptions and the cost over several months

A private prescription gives you access to the medicine after your doctor’s assessment, but you pay the full retail price. The same applies to an SNS prescription if the medicine or indication does not meet the funding conditions [1]. When comparing costs, look at the price of each pack and how many you will need under the plan your doctor decides on.

A weekly pen and a daily-use presentation cannot be compared by looking only at the price of the pack. Nor is it enough to divide the retail price by the number of milligrams shown. The number of doses in each pack, how long it lasts and planned changes in presentation all matter. Your doctor can help estimate the cost without committing to a future dose or a date for stopping.

If you have been told that you can continue afterwards on a low dose, ask which presentation you would use and for how long. Do not adjust or extend the dose on your own.

France and Spain have different rules

In France, since 15 June 2026, the social security system has reimbursed Wegovy and Mounjaro for some adults with obesity [4]. Eligibility requires a body mass index of 40 or above, or 35 or above with a weight-related condition [4]. The first prescription must come from certain specialists, and treatment is combined with dietary advice and increased physical activity [4].

This change does not affect funding in Spain. If you have seen a French price or a report about reimbursement, do not apply it to your prescription in Spain. To find out what you will pay here, use the Spanish funding status in the table and confirm the current amount before starting or renewing treatment.

When will the price come down?

There is no confirmed date from which you can budget for a specific price reduction. The price can vary by presentation, administrative decisions and market changes. A patent date on its own cannot be used to calculate the future retail price of a pen or guarantee that an alternative will appear on a particular date.

If the cost affects how long you can continue treatment, discuss it with your doctor from the outset. You can ask for an estimate by treatment stage and review the cost when the presentation changes. Planning around the current retail price avoids basing a decision on a reduction that has no confirmed date.

What does nutritional support include?

Alimmenta’s programme charges for nutrition appointments, not for the medicine. The 10-appointment package costs €480. This is a service fee and is shown separately from the medicines table. We do not sell, dispense or arrange the purchase of Ozempic, Mounjaro or Wegovy.

In appointments, we find that price raises a broader question: how to maintain your diet, physical activity and follow-up during the months of treatment. We look at which changes fit your life and coordinate your nutrition plan with the doctor who prescribes the medicine. We also help you prepare for the period after the medicine. Decisions about treatment duration and medicine adjustments are medical decisions.

If you would like to find out about the service, visit our GLP-1 nutritional support in Barcelona and online. The programme does not replace an individual assessment or medical prescribing.

Safety warning: do not buy it without a prescription

In Spain, prescription medicines containing GLP-1 analogues cannot be sold online [5]. Products offered this way may not contain the active ingredient they claim to contain and may include other harmful substances [5]. If a price seems too low or someone offers to sell it without a prescription, read about the risks of buying Ozempic without a prescription. Alimmenta does not sell medicines or help people buy them.

When to see a doctor

When you are taking a GLP-1 medicine, we support your diet during and after treatment: eating enough protein, preserving muscle and doing strength training. We want you to have habits that help maintain your weight when you stop. We do not prescribe the medicine, adjust the dose or replace the prescriber. If the medicine is causing problems, speak to your doctor.

Bear these warnings in mind if you are already taking one of these medicines.

  • If you are already taking one of these medicines, check the warning signs in the guide to the medicine you have been prescribed and follow your doctor’s advice.
  • If you have symptoms that concern you during treatment, contact the doctor who prescribed it.
  • Pain in the upper right abdomen, yellow skin or eyes, or very pale stools [6].
  • If you have low blood sugar and use insulin or medicines that can cause it, contact your healthcare team as soon as possible.
  • If you notice changes in your vision during treatment, tell your doctor as soon as possible, especially if you have diabetic retinopathy.
  • You are losing weight very quickly, with marked weakness and loss of strength [8].

If you have pain in the upper right abdomen, yellow skin or eyes, or very pale stools, go to A&E today. If you have severe low blood sugar (confusion, being unable to swallow or needing help from another person), call 112. For mild episodes of low blood sugar or changes in vision, contact your prescriber as soon as possible. If you suddenly lose your sight, go to A&E. If you lose weight very quickly and feel weak, contact your doctor this week: strength and protein are addressed, and the treatment plan is reviewed.

Most troublesome GLP-1 side effects affect the digestive system, are temporary and can be managed. Contact the prescriber if other symptoms occur.

Frequently asked questions about prices

How much does Mounjaro 5, 10 or 15 mg cost in Spain?

Each strength is a different pen and its price may vary. While we confirm the price of each one, the table shows the price range for Mounjaro. Before budgeting for several months, ask the pharmacy for the price of the pen you have been prescribed.

Is Ozempic covered by Spain’s SNS for weight loss?

No. Ozempic is authorised for type 2 diabetes [6] and is funded only for that indication, subject to prior authorisation [1]. Semaglutide authorised for weight management is Wegovy, which is not funded [1]. With a private prescription, you pay the full price.

Will I pay less if I stay on a low dose?

Not necessarily. It depends on the price of the presentation your doctor prescribes and how many packs you need. A lower dose also does not change whether the medicine is funded [1].

Does Alimmenta sell or obtain the medicine?

No. We support your diet and habits during and after treatment. Your doctor prescribes the medicine and the pharmacy dispenses it.

What we see in appointments

A common question is whether to add the price of a pack to the cost of an appointment and assume that this will be the monthly expense. In appointments, we distinguish the cost of the medicine, possible future presentations and the price of nutritional support. If your budget is tight, we discuss it early so your doctor can help you consider a realistic plan.

Before deciding how long to continue, consider the cost of the pack you will be prescribed and the possibility that the presentation may change.

For questions about indications and follow-up, see the information on Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy. If you are considering treatment, the general guide to GLP-1 medicines brings together the medical and nutritional context.

Your first step this week. Ask your doctor for the name and presentation they are proposing, then check the current price of that pack at the pharmacy.
